Should you ask clients to pay over mobile money or by bank transfer? It is one of the most common questions Rwandan freelancers have, and the honest answer is that you should offer both. But knowing the strengths of each helps you steer each client to the option that gets you paid fastest, with the least friction and cost.

The honest answer: offer more than one

Every payment method you add removes a reason for a client to delay. "I do not have MTN" or "I prefer a bank transfer for our records" should never be why you waited a week. List more than one way to pay on every invoice, and let the client choose. With that said, here is how the options compare.

MoMo Pay and Airtel Money: fast, familiar, low friction

Mobile money is how most Rwandan clients prefer to pay, especially individuals and smaller businesses. It is instant, everyone has it, and there is nothing to set up on the client's side.

• A MoMo Pay merchant code is the cleanest way to collect. Smaller payments are often free, and larger ones carry only a small percentage, so it is well suited to regular business.
• Person to person sending and cashing out at an agent carry small fees that rise with the amount, so factor those in if margins are tight.
• As of 2026, Rwanda does not charge a government levy on everyday domestic mobile money transfers, which keeps costs low.

Tariffs change from time to time, so check the current MTN and Airtel rates rather than quoting old numbers to a client.

Bank transfer: better for big and formal

Bank transfer comes into its own with larger clients and larger sums. NGOs, companies, and government contracts often require a bank transfer for their own accounting, and for a multi million franc project a transfer can be cleaner than mobile money. The trade-offs are that it is slower, the client needs your full account details, and small transfers can feel like more effort than they are worth.

• Individual or small business client, smaller amount, need it fast: lead with MoMo Pay or Airtel.
• NGO, company, or government client, larger amount, formal records: offer bank transfer.
• Not sure: put both on the invoice and let them pick.
